Many dog and cat owners who grow cannabis plants wonder why their pets show curiosity, and even chew on, these plants, what risks are involved, and how to prevent this behavior.
According to clinical veterinarian Santiago Gómez Ciavolella, interviewed by the El Planteo portal, the interest of dogs and cats in cannabis plants is mainly linked to the exploratory behavior of the animals. The specialist explains that the odor can especially attract cats, while dogs tend to investigate the environment with their mouths, especially when young.
Until about a year and a half of age, it is common for animals to chew on different objects and plants as a form of recognition, a behavior that can be intensified by the lack of adequate physical stimuli, leading to the destruction of vegetation, including cannabis plants.

The text indicates that not all animals will remain interested in the plant after the first sensory experience, and some may lose interest upon understanding that it is common plant matter.
Risks and Measures to Prevent Ingestion
Still according to El Planteo, although ingesting cannabis plants rarely leads to a fatal situation, the veterinarian states that there are no documented cases of lethal overdose in animals from eating the plant, the symptoms resulting from ingestion can cause discomfort and represent an "unpleasant moment" for the animal.
Among the recommendations mentioned in the text to prevent dogs and cats from chewing on or destroying cannabis plants are:
- Introduce the plant to the animal, allowing it to recognize it without destroying the rest of the cultivation.
- Stimulate the pet's energy release through walks and toys, reducing the likelihood of destructive behaviors motivated by boredom.
- Keep plants out of the reach of animals, similar to caring for children, for example by placing them in elevated locations or installing physical barriers.
Use barriers or fences in ground crops and, as an additional alternative, surround cannabis plants with other aromatic plants that tend to repel dogs and cats, such as lavender, citronella, lemon thyme, and rue, although this strategy is not guaranteed.
These measures, according to El Planteo, are aimed at reducing contact between pets and cannabis plants, contributing to the safety of pets and the preservation of crops.
